Brick veneer being built on a house a Perth
CategoriesGeneral News

Brick veneer is an outer layer of brick, real bricks, used to dress the structure of a building. Whether it’s a structure built with steel, concrete, or wood, bricks can be used as cladding to protect it from the elements and visually alter its appearance.

Why has brick veneer gained popularity?

Using this type of building style or process comes with some benefits. It offers a different visual element to a home’s design, whether it’s adding a layer of bricks to the exterior of the home or interior.

Second is the speed of completing the build. It makes for a much quicker building process, especially if for instance a prefabricated steel structure, with insulation is used as structural support and brick veneer is used for the outer layer.

Cost is also an important factor to consider. Brick layers can be expensive, so less brick works means saving on labor costs, making it quick and easy to install.

Installation of electrical work tends to be easier as well and can further save on electrician costs.

If done correctly, it can lead to better insulated homes. Brick on its own is a poor insulator, but if another structure is used as support with insulation in between, it can make for better temperature control.

Here is a quick visual explanation of brick veneer:

What are the disadvantages of brick veneer?

Keep in mind that brick veneer needs another main structure for support as it is only one layer of brick. So, on its own it cannot work.

Depending on the method of installation used, there might be some leakage that occurs during heavy rain. This might be more prevalent on older homes. However, modern building methods generally don’t face similar issues.

Does brick veneer look like real brick?

Yes, it does. You are still using real bricks to cover the outer layer of a wall or house. It’s not a double wall brick, only one layer leaning on another layer for structural support.

Is brick veneer and brick cladding the same thing?

Brick cladding is not the same as veneer. Cladding comes pre-installed onto a tile like stone wall cladding but also gets assembled onto a different structure. While brick veneer is physically laying bricks on top of each other, building a wall against a supporting structure. However, the term cladding and veneer can often to be used interchangeably meaning an outer layer placed on a support structure.

Does brick veneer crack easily?

As per the nature of bricks, being porous, cracking can happen over time, especially when exposed to moisture. In fact, it’s normal to some degree. Generally, it’s not an issue if it occurs at veneer level. If the cracks go deeper, it can be related to structural issues or issues with your foundation which is much more serious.

If cracks appear on veneer level, it can be repaired. It’s always safe to have your home assessed by a professional to make sure it is structurally secure and there are no hidden issues when cracks are discovered.

How do you maintain brick veneer?

Like any brick wall, you want to inspect walls for cracking and loose mortar. Mortar can be refilled again. If it has started to discolor, there are various methods of cleaning brick, such as using soap and a brush or even a pressure washer (use with caution without removing mortar).

Is brick veneer cheaper than normal bricks?

It depends on the main structure used, labor costs, material costs. Generally, if a prefabricated steel structure is used, which is popular in Perth now, yes it can be cheaper. Again, various factors determine wether it’s cheaper or not. It’s best to contact a building professional like IQ Construction for more information.
