For us at IQ Construction, it was a genuine privilege to bring this remarkable childcare centre in Halls Head, Castle Grounds, to life! To not only build a new early learning environment for local families, but also to play a part in restoring and reimagining the iconic Halls Heads castle, made this project especially meaningful to our team. To help transform a place with so much history into something that will now be enjoyed by a new generation of children is something we are very proud of.
History regarding the castle grounds
Halls Head Childcare Centre is more than a new early learning project; it’s the next chapter in one of Mandurah’s most memorable landmarks. Many locals have fond memories of the old Castle Fun Park, which unfortunately over the years, fell into ruin. Now, it has been reimagined into a fresh, purpose-built childcare environment, where the castle has been placed at the heart of a space designed for children.
The castle was built in 1979, created by George Kaspar and inspired by the famous Neuschwanstein Castle in the Bavarian Alps. Over time, it grew into a family destination with a miniature village, mini golf, a kiosk and even an Australia-shaped swimming pool.
Unfortunately, the castle and surrounding area had a long period of decline which ultimately led to its closure in 1999. After, it became an eye sore to the area, increasingly weathered, vandalised, neglected and even damaged by a bushfire in 2007.
Yet, many hoped one day it would be brought back to life.
The creation of the Castle Grounds Childcare centre
The property was bought years ago by developer Darren Blowes, part of Blokk Property, who initially wanted to turn the area into a retail and dining destination. Since then he shifted his focus to a childcare centre and sold the remaining property to another developer for further development.
He wanted to keep the castle at the centre of the childcare centre to share its legacy with the next generation of children. As such, the castle has been completely renovated.
The developer wanted to create a childcare centre that offers world-class facilities and is woven into the very fabric of the Mandurah community.

Ample parking space with good traffic flow
Site functionality plays a critical part. Convenient parking and efficient vehicle movement are essential, especially during busy drop-off and pick-up periods.
At Halls Head, the site was developed with a strong focus on accessibility, usability and traffic flow, helping the centre operate smoothly daily. A childcare centre may look impressive, but if access or traffic movement is limited, it can quickly create a problem.
We understand that commercial success is often shaped by these everyday details. A good site layout supports a better user experience, the business and adds value to the completed asset.
Safety compliant outdoor play areas
Rather than treating the external space as secondary, it was approached as a major component of the centre’s value and identity.
